Edema is one of the most common yet misunderstood presentations in the acute care setting. Often dismissed as a secondary symptom, unmanaged swelling can significantly impede mobility, delay wound healing, and complicate discharge planning. This webinar provides an essential introduction to acute edema, focusing on differential diagnosis and etiology. We will explore the nuances of post-traumatic and post-surgical swelling, the complexities of "acute-on-chronic" lymphedema, and the clinical red flags of misdiagnosed chronic edema. Participants will learn why traditional anti-embolism stockings (TED hose) are inappropriate for active edema management and will gain practical, evidence-based tools—including elevation, mobility, and longitudinal focal compression—to implement immediately at the bedside.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:
- Differentiate between the etiologies of acute post-traumatic swelling, post-surgical edema, and acute-on-chronic lymphedema.
- Explain basic lymphatic and venous anatomy and the transition from the traditional Starling’s Law to the Revised Starling Principle (Glycocalyx).
- Critique the use of anti-embolism stockings (TED hose) vs. therapeutic compression in the management of active edema.
- Implement immediate bedside strategies for fluid management, including optimal elevation, early mobility, and the use of longitudinal focal compression.
